Please tell us a little more about yourself and about Timber + Main.
We are a husband-wife woodworking team on a mission to give old lumber a new life as handcrafted furniture and decor. We love spending time outdoors and whether it’s a day hike or a big vacation, we’re always in search of an adventure. Timber + Main focuses on creating beautiful, functional pieces using reclaimed materials, classic design, and artisan craftsmanship. We create custom pieces ranging from dining and coffee tables, seating benches, cutting boards, and hand-carved mixing spoons.
What made you want to start your business?
We began by building furniture for ourselves and realized we could use our skills and passion to build a business focused on sustainability. By using salvaged and reclaimed materials, we’re offering high quality products with a small carbon footprint. Repurposing old lumber allows us to preserve its history, tell its story, and reduce the demand on forests for lumber.
What is the toughest decision that you have had to make with regards to your business?
As a husband-wife team, every decision is a drawn out compromise. We have very different personal taste, so it takes a lot of discussion and strategic thinking to create a unified vision for Timber + Main. Recently, we decided to move into an actual shop space and expand our operations. It’s a risk, but we’re both up for the adventure and we know our dissimilar personalities and skill sets are a built in system of checks and balances for each step we take.
What is the future goal for Timber + Main?
This seems to always be evolving. Our number one goal is to create beautiful and durable pieces while helping make the world a better place. We hope to build partnerships, participate in philanthropy, and inspire others to live sustainably.
What have been the most satisfying moments of your journey in creating Timber + Main?
Almost every build tests our patience and we’ve learned over time how to communicate with each other and work effectively as a team. Each project we take on pushes us to the edge of our comfort in terms of design and fabrication and when it’s finished, not only did we create a really beautiful piece, but we’ve expanded our comfort zone and proven that we’re capable of really pushing the boundaries of classic design and craftsmanship. Woodwork is inherently messy and most of the process is pretty ugly. But once that last coat of polish is applied, it’s so very satisfying to see the end result.
Before you started, if there is any advice that you would’ve gave to yourself, what would it have been?
Trust your gut. There’s a reason you believe so strongly in this business and by following your intuition, you can find the right path. There are many different ways to start a business, build a table, and create a brand. Do it the way you want to do it and infuse yourself into it.
