The Innovator Advocator: Hand in Hand

Please tell us a little more about yourself and about Hand in Hand.

Founded in 2011 by myself, Bill, and my wife, Courtney, Hand in Hand is an eco-friendly bath and lifestyle business with a social mission. For every product sold, we donate one bar of soap and one month of clean water to children in need. We started with one bar of soap and today make multiple bath, beauty and home products across two collections and ten fragrances. Today, we sell bar soaps, bath salts, candles, face tonics, hand salves, lip balms, liquid hand soaps, lotions, room sprays and sugar scrubs. All of our products are eco-friendly, all natural, and made in the USA.

What made you want to start your business?

Our business started after Courtney and I read an article stating that 5 million children die annually from water related illnesses and that simple hand washing could eliminate 65% of those deaths. We realized we could make a bar soap that was all natural, good for the environment, had pretty packaging, and that gave back. In 2011, we started with one bar of soap and a simple mission to donate a bar for every one that we sold. Today, we make many products and have expanded our social donations into providing clean water. For every product that we sell, we donate one bar of soap and one month of clean water to a child in need.

What is the toughest decision that you have had to make with regards to your business?

Running your own business means having to make tough decisions all the time. From deciding what to launch next season to expanding operations, every day is filled with tough choices.

What is the future goal for Hand in Hand?

Our goal is to keep providing the same, high-quality products that give back!

What have been the most satisfying moments of your journey in creating Hand in Hand?

Our first trip to Haiti in 2012 will always stick with me and was definitely a powerful moment for both Courtney and myself. Being there and meeting the children, seeing the looks on their faces when they smelled their first bar of soap; it was in that moment that our business became real and the people we were wanting to help were real. In 2013, the opening of our first well in Haiti was another moment that was truly satisfying.

Before you started, if there is any advice that you would’ve gave to yourself, what would it have been?

I don’t believe in looking back, but if I had to tell myself anything, it would be this simple reminder: It’s going to be hard and it’s going to be a bumpy ride at times, but it is going to be so worth it!
