The Innovator Advocator: Keys Apparel

Please tell us a little more about yourself and about Keys Apparel.

Keys Apparel is a social entrepreneurship based in Los Angeles, CA. We have partnered with various organizations to make pet apparel that is hand-made by rescued victims of human trafficking. The product helps sustain social justice organizations across the United States and around the world. In simple terms: love your pet, love people. We hand make various dog collar collections, leashes, bandanas for humans and non humans, toys and more products to come.

What made you want to start your business?

Luke Cole and Jared Flower love their dogs. They also have an unyielding desire to take action against social injustices. So when the idea of starting a business that combined these two passions surfaced in a casual conversation in 2011, the answer was a resounding “Yes.” They wanted to make a practical, likeable, and most importantly, life-changing product. Luke and Jared both have strong ties to family and friends who are involved with organizations on the front lines of the battle against modern day slavery. Keys Apparel is simply a way to open a channel of support that unites these two worlds.

What is the toughest decision that you have had to make with regards to your business?

In our experience, decisions are easier to make when your company is committed to a cause. It brings clarity to things and helps define who we are. When faced with an important decision, our team comes together to advise from our perspectives and this helps further guide us in making tough decisions simple.

What is the future goal for Keys Apparel?

The ultimate goal is to make a long lasting, self-sustaining impact in the communities we deal with. We are moving towards our own vocational centers in other countries. These centers will teach trade, skills and pay good wages to women and girls. That’s empowerment; that’s sustainability; that’s our goal.

What have been the most satisfying moments of your journey in creating Keys Apparel?

Of course, knowing that every small success in our company is a bigger one in someones life. Also, every time we receive feedback and support from people. Whether it is on Instagram, Facebook or in person at our local dog park, it is always satisfying to know people support our vision and like our stuff!

Before you started, if there is any advice that you would’ve gave to yourself, what would it have been?

It definitely would have been to start this company sooner! Don’t hesitate.
